Position: Public Affairs Intern (non-paid)
Closing Date: September 13, 2018
Duration of Internship: Three Months Renewable (Not To Exceed Six-Months)
Work Hours: Not to exceed 40 hours/week
Salary: Non-Remunerated

The purpose of the Student Internship Program (FNSIP) at the United States Embassy is to offer students accepted into the program the unique opportunity of experiencing a foreign affairs work environment. A student participating in this program is not an employee of the U.S. Embassy, or the U.S. Department of State, or the United States Government. The program is uncompensated and will not be used to displace any employee or to staff a position which is a normal part of the agency’s work force.

The U.S. Embassy in Yaounde has an opening for one (1) Public Affairs Intern. This position is located at the Embassy Branch Office (EBO) in Douala, Cameroon.

Basic Function of The Position

Under the direct supervision of the EBO Principal Officer (PO), the Public Affairs Intern is responsible for planning and implementing all EBO cultural and media outreach programs. Such programs include lectures, seminars, press conferences, and  media interviews.  He/she advises the PO on all aspects of post cultural, educational, and media programs.

Qualifications Required

  1. Education: The intern’s field of studies must be related to the position.
  2. Language Proficiency: Level IV (fluent) speaking/reading/writing English and French are required. (This will be tested.)
  3. Skills and Abilities: The candidate must be able to communicate orally with a variety of audiences and high-level officials in English and French and draft all program-related correspondence and reports in English and French.  He/She must be able to develop and maintain contacts with target NGOs, civil society institutions and mid to high-level officials in the host country; ability to design and maintain a database of exchange program alumni; ability to find relevant information on the internet using common search engines. He/She must be able to work under minimal supervision, adhere to timetables, and meet deadlines, take initiative to identify programming and outreach opportunities. (Skills and abilities may be tested.)
  4. Knowledge: The candidate must have good working knowledge of Cameroon’s socio-cultural and educational structures, institutions, political parties, NGOs and key civil society institutions; including working knowledge of U.S. society, educational systems, arts and culture.

Additional Selection Criteria: The candidate must be able to obtain a successful security and medical certification.
